These are solutions that are environmentally myopic. By this I mean technology that cause greater long term damage than it's short term gain.
For the most part innovation has always been shortsighted for no other reason that is was hard to forecast.
Even if they had wanted to there is no way that the inventors of the musket could have foreseen the oncoming weapons one-upmanship that would in 200 years produced a bomb so powerful it could have destroyed the 13 colonies in a matter of seconds.
It is only within the last generation or so that we have had the understanding and abilty to take a longer look at the impact made by the new.
