A need for the mundane

In Maple and Vine, a play about a gated community in the mid-west that has consciously rolls back the clock to the mid-50's, one of the characters explains that the community promotes the mundane aspects of daily life as a good thing.  The reason being that the daily tasks, such as going to the library or buying a pair of pants, forces interaction with the physical community.

According to the character the more wired we become the less people we physically interact with. This is leading to a greater degree of loneliness.

This defense of the mundane makes sense to me.  Perhaps this explains the popularity of reality TV.

How else to explain why watching random people house hunting has become entertainment?
