I was thinking about this, because if there is social evolution there must things that drive it- or to put it another way, there must things that social evolution favors.
And the things I came up with suprised me, but I feel it correct, because if I take a long view and look at what compelled people to action (and what has prospered) I got to say the drivers of social evolution are peace, love and understanding.
Now this might seem pollyanna, but if you really take a look at things like greed, self-preservation, racism, etc. - this things are self-destructive and from an evolutionary point of view suicuidal.
The quickest way to destroy a society or culture is to shield it from outside interests, or to prosper at the expense of others.
There is an evolutionary ebb, flow and eventual equilibrium in innovation. This equilibrium tends toward 'peace love and understanding'.
Pundits and newspapermen have become the new weather men trying to define this ebb and flow.
