How does it happen? Desire. Not your ordinary desire but a desire that develops an edge. That point were desire stops being a daydream and takes flight in a contraption made of wood and canvas; that point when it's sets sail on a 300ft boat and travels to the unknown.
Once it starts there are forces to shape it and develop it. But what of the original desire? It's not hunger, shelter, procreation -- these are necessities. The survival instinct is important to the development of innovation, but it does not invent.
The type of desire I'm talking about can only come from inspiration. Inspiration, desire, creation - this how it happens. Nothing empirical here, but a gut feeling about how it comes to be.
Sometimes there is a direst line between the inspiratin and the final product. Sometimes it is the aha moment. And sometimes it is just an accidental daydream that captures desire and it gives an edge.
